Flyers Rights Launches “ScannerGate” Petition to protest use of
Scanners and “Enhanced” Pat Down Mechanisms as Primary Screening Method
Flyers Rights (www.flyersrights.org) the largest Airline passenger rights group in the world, today announced the launch of a Petition to protest the implementation of Backscatter Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) Machines as well as the “Enhanced” Pat Down Mechanisms for those who “Opt Out” of the machines.
“The TSA has offered no credible specifications for Radiation emitted by these machines, and multiple constituencies, including the US Airline Pilots Association are declining to be screened. The TSA has also implemented an “Enhanced” Pat Down procedure that includes touching the genitals as well breasts and buttocks. It’s clear the intent behind this new Pat Down process is to discourage Flyers from opting out of the AIT Scanners,” Said Kate Hanni, Director of Flyers Rights.
“We are asking all Travelers to sign this petition: http://www.petitiononline.com/StopScan/
The Petition is called “ScannerGate: Privacy is Paramount.”
“We believe that all the TSA is doing is adding layers of security- and in this case, more is not better- more is just more. We believe that both the AIT and Enhanced Pat Down Mechanisms are a violation of all Americans 4th Amendment rights against unreasonable search. It’s time for the TSA to adopt Risk Based, Intelligent Screening, and not simply add layers on the existing process.”
Legendary Consumer Rights Advocate Ralph Nader, Attorney Paul Hudson and Flyers Rights Director Kate Hanni had sent a request for a meeting to John Pistole and Janet Napolitano and thus far have not been contacted for that meeting. http://tinyurl.com/2cqomrs
“It’s unacceptable that the TSA and DHS would meet with Travel Groups, Pilots, Flight Attendants, Hotels etc. and NOT meet with the largest passengers rights group in the world,” said Kate.
Flyers Rights advice to their membership and all who are traveling through the holidays is as follows:
o Opt out of scanners
o Ask for a private room for your pat down WITH a witness,
o If you have a child under the age of 12 you can ask the ticket agent if your child was pre-selected for additional screening, if they were you can ask to have them de-selected.
o If during the screening process/pat down you feel you or your child was molested call the authorities.
o Don’t wear metal and if you aren’t pre-selected for additional screening you might avoid the dreaded pat down.

O.K. people. I don't know about you, but if a scanner or a pat down makes flying safer, I'm all for it! Americans are going to whine and complain until something happens, then look to place the blame somewhere. If you don't want to participate, take a train or the bus! Flying is not a right. If these cautions had been in practice how many lives would have been saved? Like I said, if you don't want to participate....GO GREYHOUND!
Well, I can't take the bus everywhere....and just because I want to fly, doesn't mean the TSA should not come up with a better way(biometrics, MRIs) that is safer healthwise. These scanners are X ray machines, and X rays are NOT good for humans --- thats why we wear lead shields when we take x rays in doctors' offices.
UK has found that these scanners are not effective for non metals anyways. How come Israel(which is surrounded by enemies) doesn't resort to these disgusting sexual probes, while the TSA(USA) does?

You both have valid points, but I think i'll have to side with Uma. Flying may not be a right, but it is an important industry to the U.S., and to our international relationships. And if that means I have to sign a waver saying that, "in the event of a terrorist attack on my flight that's caused because the attacker opted out of a body scan, I do not hole the United States Government or TSA responsible", then fine. I'm more likely to get hit by a taxi leaving the airport anyway.
@Jeff: 1) the 4th Amendment guarantees me the right to freedom from unreasonable searches. I'm sorry, but being either electronically strip-searched or fondled by a goon with a badge WITH NO PROBABLE CAUSE is clearly "unreasonable." 2) I didn't place the blame on the government after 9/11, nor would I do so in any hypothetical future terrorist attack. 3) I live in Alaska. I have family in Texas. What train or bus will carry me to visit my family (or vice versa)? In the winter time -- when a sizable portion of the U.S. travels -- the AlCan highway between Alaska and Montana is *treacherous*, so driving isn't always an option either. Why should I have to give up my 4th Amendment rights just so you can feel warm and fuzzy because Big Brother is "protecting" you? Nevermind that a terrorist could *STILL* bring down the airplane by smuggling explosives in a body cavity...are you going to suggest that we all submit to body cavity searches, too? 4) "Flying is not a right", so if you are so afraid of a terrorist incident, take a train or the bus. If you don't want to meet OBL in the air, GO GREYHOUND! See how easy that was?
Opt out of scammer porn, AND opt out of homosexual pedophile gaterape molestations. Are you a human or a sheep, a citizen or a slave?
1. You have a Constitutionally guaranteed right to travel by any means, without govt intrusion, without govt licensing, without internal passports, without govt putting its dirty hands inside your underwear to feel your sexual organs, without being killed by gamma death rays (so-called "X-rays"). JUST SAY NO.
2. TSA is optional at all airports for all airlines. No law requires TSA to conduct security checks.
3. 80% of TSA airport screeners are NOT citizens of USA. Fed govt refuses to deport 50-million illegal aliens, refueses to seal the US border, refuses to allow the US military to defend USA (remember 9/11/2001?).
4. When one group of citizens gets immunity or a right or a privlege, then EVERYONE gets that same benefit, under constitutional equal protection doctrine. US Constitution...it's THE LAW. Same protections are in all 50 states' constitutions. Pilots are now exempt from TSA screenings, so EVERYONE is exempt.
5. The Fed govt carried out the 9/11 terrorist attacks, as the Fed govt confessed in writing with Pentagon's declassified OPERATION NORTHWOODS, OPERATION GLADIO, and the Israeli false-flag attack on the USS Liberty. ALWAYS carry a copy of NORTHWOODS when flying commercial airlines, and give copies to all TSA screeners, pilots, aircrew and fellow passengers. First Amendment...use it or lose it.
I'm currently a college student, writing a paper over this very subject, but until March of this year I was a soldier, defending the freedom of Americans (or at least thats what I was supposed to be doing). I've served 2 deployments to Iraq, wondering both times how it was benifiting my country. I completely disagree with jeff. Jeff, people like you allow the govt to rule us instead of serve us. I urge all Americans to participate in their American freedoms, to express patriotism in its truest form (making our country better by supporting our freedom and rights) and write your congressman, expressing that you no longer want your 4th ammentment right to be ignored. These full body scanners and "enhanced" patdowns are not only rediculous, they're unconstitutional.
Jeff,
What I hear you saying is, “If you have a fundamental disagreement with degrading, unethical, and ineffective TSA security measures, find some other transportation, such as Greyhound.” It is interesting that you chose bus transportation. Perhaps if African-Americans did not like sitting in the back of the bus, they could have just flown. Jeff, we are talking about American ideals of basic human rights, about treating people with dignity and due process. We are talking about the values that separate America from the majority of the world. However, I am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. Please post the Greyhound schedules for buses between San Antonio and London, Paris, Copenhagen, Oslo, Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfort, Stuttgart, Milan, Moscow, Dublin, Edinburgh, Ankara, Sophia, Tel Aviv, and Madrid. These are the overseas airports to which I flew this year as a DoD scientist and program manager of multi-million dollar DoD initiatives in support of Global Counter-IED programs and NATO Defense Against Terrorism programs. Those really long underwater bus rides will allow me to catch up on my reading, and my utility bills will be really low because I will never, ever, be at home.
Best, Dr. A.

Josh, thank you for your service.
Jeff - Flying IS a Right. It is established in the constitution as our right as americans to freely travel. There has been ZERO proof that this makes anybody safer.what it does do is provide a lot of patroonage dollars. The staff is untrained and unqualified to use this - much less perform the pat downs they do. The abuses have been HUGE. Those who surrender a little liberty in order to obtain a little safety, deserve neither.
